97 - Bhagvat Gita Chapter 1 Shlok 8

भवान्भीष्मश्च  कर्णश्च  कृपश्च  समितिअन्जयः 
अश्वत्थामा  विकर्णश्च  सौम्दात्तिस्तथैव     (1.8)

भवान आप  (द्रोणाचार्य);  और ; भीष्मः पितामह भीष्म ;  तथा ; कर्णः कर्ण;
 औरसमितिअन्जयः – संग्राम  विजयी ; कृपः  – क्रिपाचार्य ;  तथा ; तथा  वैसे ; एव हि ; अश्वत्थामा  – अश्वत्थामा ; विकार्नः विकर्ण ;  और ; सौम्दात्तिः  – सौमदत्त  का  पुत्र  भूरिश्रवा .

Who are the stalwarts of the Kaurav army ?

Dronaacharya – Represents Revenge (Badle ki bhavna) . Seeking revenge against King Durpad
Pitamah Bhishm – Wishes, Desire (Icchaa - इच्छा). Icchaa Mrityu – The whole Kaurav army is defeated but Pitamah Bhishm (desire) is still alive. Desire is the last thing that leaves us prior to death.
Karna – Uccha Akansha, उच्च आकांशा  - Wanting to prove that he is the best archer, better than Arjun.
Kripa Acharye – Kripa also means pity. Feeling pity for someone less fortunate is great but asking to be pitied, asking for a favour by not speaking the truth. Being the Kul Guru he refused to speak the truth, did not say a word, when evil minded Kauravas were undressing Dropadi
Ashwatthaama – He represents Aashakti. An addiction, something you cannot live without. When Guru Dron (falsely) hears of Ashwatthama’s death he lays his weapons down and allows Dhristadhumna to slay him.
Vikarna – is Vikalpa meaning doubt, hesitation, not believing in the righteous way.
Saumdatti – Son of Saumdutt, Bhurishrava who represents Hatred & Revenge. Bhurishrava & Saatyaki’s parents had a fight over Devaki. When Saatyaki was invited to join the Pandava’s army, Bhurishrava joined the Kaurav’s army so he could avenge his father.


While every Shlok in Sri Bhagvat Gita is enlightening, this Shlok is particularly important in that it shows the importance of Karma. Janma (birth) is important in that it provides one with a platform to perform great deeds. Despite being born in a family with all the means of success, where one has easy access to knowledge from one’s already learned elders, it is the deeds (Karma) that will decide our destiny.  We see here that the great Purohits Dronaacharya and Kripaachaarya are both standing on the side of evil (Kauravs).

Similarly in RCM Balkand Doha 176 we hear about Ravan…

उपजे  जदपि  पुलस्त्य  कुल  पावन  अमल  अनूप 
तदपि  महीसुर  श्राप  बस  भय सकल  अघरूप (RCM 1/176)

Upaje jadapi Pulastya kul Paawan amal anoop
Tadapi Mahisur Shraap bas bhaye sakal aghroop

Despite being born in a great family with great ethics and teachings, due to the bad deeds of the previous life, Ravan becomes a Raakshas, an evil person.

Gita 1.7


अस्माकं  तु विशिष्टा ये  तान्निबोध  द्विजोत्तम
नायक  मम  सैन्यस्य  संज्ञार्थं तान  ब्रवीमि  ते  (1/7)

Asmaakam Tu Vishishta Ye Taannabodh Dwijottam
Kayak Mam Sainyasya Sangyartham Taan Bravimi Te


द्विजोत्तम (Dwijottam) – He shreshta gyani, guru, brahman ! अस्माकं (Asmaakam) – Hamaare paksha mein. तु (Tu) – Bhi, ये (Ye) – Jo, विशिष्टा (Vishishta) – Mukhye (hay), तानू (Taanu) – Un par (bhi aap), निबोध  (Nibodh) – Dhyaan dijiye. ते (Te) – Aapko, संज्ञार्थं (Sangyartham) – Yaad dilaane ke liye, मम (Mam) – Meri, सैन्यस्य (Sainyasya) – Sena ke (jo), नायकाः (Nayakaah) – Naayak hay, तानू (Taanu) – Un ko (may),  ब्रवीमि (Bravimi) – Kahta hu.

Dhritraashtra ka putra Duryodhan, apne guru Dron Acharye se baat kar raha hay. Pahle (1.1) aap sun chuke ki Dhritraashtra agyaanta ka prateek hay. Agyaanta (lack of knowledge, ignorance) se payda Duryodhan “Moh” ka prateek hay. (Moh = Ignorance, delusion, confusion, hallucination)


Digression
In describing Kaalketu (the wild pig who distracts King Bhanu Pratap) in RCM Doha 170, Tulsidas Ji leaves little hints for the jigyaasu (inquisitive) students to decode the hidden meanings of his scripture.

कालकेतु निसिचर तहँ आवा। जेहिं सूकर होइ नृपहि भुलावा।। 1/170/3
Kaalketu Nishichar Taha Aawa; Jehi Sukar Hoi Nripahi Bhulaawa.
तेहि के सत सुत अरु दस भाई। खल अति अजय देव दुखदाई।। 1/170/5
Tehi ke sat sut aru das bhai; Khal ati ajay dev dukhdai.

Who (or what) was that black wild pig that distracts and leads astray the valiant, intelligent, powerful King Bhanu Pratap ?  The hint is found in “Tehi ke sat sut” – one who has one hundred children. In hindu mythology who has 100 children ? – King Dhritraastra.

So it is safe to deduce that the wild black pig is synonymous to Dhritraastra who symbolises agyaanta, ignorance, delusion, moh, etc.
The valiant, intelligent, powerful King Bhanu Pratap represents us humans, who is constantly distracted by the delusion of “get rich quick” schemes, short-term gains, quick ways to seek peace and happiness, and in such pursuit we often meet Kapti Muni (fraudulent people) who eventually take away whatever we had. In the pretence of offering us peace and prosperity, often, they leave us with almost nothing. That is the ultimate fate of King Bhanu Pratap, which all of you have heard of many time before.
