37 - Bakre Ka Balidaan

Bakre Ka Balidaan

There are references of Balidaan in Hindi scriptures, involving goats, horses etc.
Balidaan means sacrifice, give up, let go, tyaag.

The humle Bakra (goat) has been the animal of choice as offering of sacrifice to the demigods. Later chicken (Murga) and other animals were slaughtered.

Goat is the symbol of Abhimaan, Ahankaar, Ghamand.

When the Vedas & Puraans refer to “Bakre ka Balidaan” they mean apne Abhimaan, Ahankaar, Ghamand ka tyaag (balidaan) karo. Apne ander jo kaalima (evil thoughts) ko nikaalo.

If the word is broken up, Bali Daan, then it means donate or offer blood. This does not seem to be the intended meaning in the scriptures. How can one achieve happiness, anand, eternal bliss by killing another living soul ? One, however, can be very happy and enjoy life if one is able to control their ego, pride, Abhimaan, Ahankaar, Ghamand !!!

A bit of light reading for those wanting a bit more related info…..

Balkand Doha 65 (Ram Charit Manas)

समाचार सब संकर पाए। बीरभद्रु करि कोप पठाए।।1
Samachaar sab Shankar paaye, Veerbhadru kari kop pathaaye.
जग्य बिधंस जाइ तिन्ह कीन्हा। सकल सुरन्ह बिधिवत फलु दीन्हा।।2

Yah itihaas sakal jag jaani, Tate may sanchep bakhaani.

Sati Mata Prajapati Daksha ke yagya mein apna praan tyaag deti hay. Is samachaar (news) ko jab Shiv Ji ne suna to unhe bahut krodh (gussa) aaya. Yeh katha to sabhi log jaante hay isi liye Tulsidaas Ji kahte hay ki yaha par kewal sanchep (briefly) mein batat hu.

Puri katha ko Bhagwat Puraan ya Mahabharat ki kathaao mein sunane ko milta hay.

Rishi Bhrigu, jo yagya kara raha tha, Veer Bhadra ne un ki daadhi (beard) morch (moustache) ukhaad diye. Inhi dardhi morch ko hila hila kar Shive Ji ki hansi khilli kit hi.
Bhag Deo ki aankhe (eyes) ford di. Ye ankhe matka matka kar Daksha ko uksa (encourage, entice) kar raha tha ki Shiv Ji ki hansi karaaye.
Pusha ke daant (teeth) ukhaard diye. Jab Daksha Shiv Ji ki ninda kar raha tha to ye “batteesi” nikaal kar hans (laugh) raha tha.
Prajapati Daksha ko gira kar, badi mushkil se, unki gala (neck) kaat kar sir (head) ko alag kiya – use maar daala.
Mata Prasuti (Daksha’s wife) ne Shiv ji se vinay vandana ki apne pati ko kshama karne ke liye, to Shive Ji ne ek Bakra ka sir kaat kar Daksha ko laga diya, unhe zinda kar diye. Daksha Abhimaan, Ahankaar, Ghamand ka prateek hay. Apne aage kisi ko nahi maanta, apne ko sab se bada maanta hay, aur kisi ki chalne nahi deta.

Guru Jan Ki Jay Ho !
Muskuraate Raho !
Most elderly people would remember functions where animals were sacrificed. This is not limited to the Hindu culture. There is the sacrificial lamb in Christianity. There is Bakra-Eid and Qurbaani in Islam.
