Yama Puja

In Hindu mythology Yama signifies Anger (Krodh), darkness (Andhkaar), illiteracy (agyanta), death etc
Dhanteras and Yama Puja are in preparation for the peak of our celebrations on Deepavali. Yama Puja is confused with praying to Yamaraj to procrastinate or defer our death – this is not possible. Similarly, Dhanteras is confusingly (incorrectly) used by the commercial retailers and shopkeepers to pray for more wealth.
On Yama Puja day, we pray to Prabhu (via all our dieties) to remove all negative aspects of our life: anger, darkness, unhappiness, illiteracy, fear….! Once these negative aspects are removed only then will we be able to see the positive aspects on Deepavali - knowledge, happiness, serenity, hopefulness, enjoyment and elation of human spirit.
The whole family sits in front of a Diya and repents for the bad deeds of the past. We pray for energy and strength to conquer our inner darkness, illumination of our soul, to achieve the ultimate knowledge which will free us from enmity, hatred, fear of and violence against other fellow beings.
On this night we pledge that we will make an effort to talk to and befriend our loved ones that we may have had differences with in the past. We vow that as the darkness ends in the morning and a new day emerges (as the new Hindu year begins), I will be a new and a changed person (do not attempt to change others). The emphasis (incorrectly) is on getting new clothes, new utensils, new furniture, etc. But all that is needed is just a new “you”, a new look on life, a renewed friendship with the dear sister, brother, uncle, aunt, father, mother and other relatives, friends, neighbours etc we may not have been in contact with or not in good terms with.
Let us patiently wait for the new day to emerge – the height of our celebrations – Deepavali.
